The global recession hit Sony, $1 billion annual loss

On Thursday report, it was said Sony lost 165 billion yen ($1.72 billion) in the quarter that ended March 31, the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, compared with net income of 29 billion yen in the year-ago period. Revenue for the three-month period was 1.5 trillion yen ($15.5 billion), a drop of 22 percent from a year earlier.
Adding that to the previous three quarters of fiscal 2008, the company saw an annual loss of 98.9 billion yen ($1 billion). The loss was a dramatic reversal from the preceding fiscal year, when Sony earned 369.4 billion yen. The company blamed the decline on lower sales, increased competition, the stronger value of the yen, and the sluggish Japanese stock market. Annual revenue dropped 13 percent to 7.73 trillion yen ($78.8 billion).
The downturn is forcing Sony to cut costs and staff. The company plans to shut down three manufacturing plants in Japan, reducing the number of worldwide plants from 57 to 49. Sony says it is on track to eliminate 8,000 jobs by year's end, mostly through forced retirement. The company now hopes to reduce costs by 300 billion yen for the year ahead. Despite these steps, Sony said it doesn't expect a recovery anytime soon and is projecting a 120 billion yen ($1.2 billion) loss for the fiscal year through March 2010.
With the price of memory chips dropping faster than the stock market did in October, Blu-Ray will live very short. Soon you'll be able to buy 128GB memory sticks for less than what a blank Blu-Ray disc costs. So you get more capacity, longer shelf life, faster data transfer rates. Since players for electronic chips will have no moving parts, they will also last longer, be cheaper to manufacture, consume less power, make less noise, run cooler, etc....

Apple responds to Laptop Hunters?

For Apple has decided to address the Microsoft "Laptop Hunters" campaign, albeit in its usual laconic manner. John Hodgman, the actor behind the PC guy, has the human version of most of Best Buy with him, as a laptop huntress called Megan declares she wants a big screen with a fast processor.
One by one, the suitors are dismissed as being unsuitable. Their failings? Small screens. Slow processors. Oh, and viruses, crashes, and headaches. A couple had really dreadful suits too. Perhaps Apple decided that, in a difficult economy, it had to address arguments that it sees as bilge-filled bunkum. Perhaps the company thought the Microsoft ads opened themselves up a little too much to some spring amusement.
Whatever you say about the different ad campaigns, at least the Apple advertisements are funny. Whatever ad agency Microsoft uses and whoever is in charge of marketing at Microsoft obviously have no sense of humour at all. If Microsoft was going to take a page out of Apple's play book, they should have taken the humour page.

Schmidt-Apple relationship

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Google confirmed that the Federal Trade Commission plans to hold discussions with the company over a possible conflict of interest due to CEO Eric Schmidt's participation on both Google and Apple's board of directors.
In response to questions posed by reporters during a lunch meeting with Google executives--including Schmidt--Google vice president and general counsel Kent Walker confirmed that Google was aware of a "pending FTC discussion" into Schmidt's board seats, which was reported earlier in the week by The New York Times.
Google does not believe Schmidt's role on Apple's board presents a problem, and encourages company members to participate on boards, said David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer and senior vice president for corporate development.
An interesting note here is that the new AdWords interface strongly advises against using Safari--Apple's web browser. I wonder if Schmitt recuses himself from discussions of that software as well. I guess he just doesn't remember.

Sony and Microsoft need motion control?

A report in Variety last week said Sony might be unveiling a motion-sensing controller at E3 that's more advanced than its Sixaxis (motion-sensing) controller. It will be shaped like a Wii temote and use LEDs and "a small Webcam to track the device's movements." Variety claims the Sony controller will be more accurate that the Wii remote, especially as the player moves it toward and away from the screen.
Engadget also reported last week that it received a tip from someone who claimed to be an insider at Microsoft. The person said the company is working on a motion-sensing bar that follows full-body movement without controllers. Players would be able to control all aspects of the game with their bodies.
There's no word on when (or if) either of these technologies will be announced, since neither Microsoft nor Sony have commented on them. While there is a real possibility of both companies trying to get into the motion-sensing space, I don't think it's necessary for them to do so.
Nintendo has had an extremely difficult time trying to get third-party developers to develop games that exploit the Wii's full potential even though its console is far and away the most popular of this generation. Will a new motion-control mechanism from Sony or Microsoft be different in some way? I don't see it.
Motion controls are fun. But they're not required to make a good game console great. Both Sony and Microsoft need to stick to what they do best--offering a diverse and powerful gaming experience--and leave motion controls to Nintendo.
Have to agree with TPAM. Motion control is not exactly as exciting as it could have been. In many PS3 games it already feels tacked on Sony and Microsoft should stick to what they are best at. I am looking forward to the Conduit on the Wii. Hopefully it will work great even sans Motion Plus.

Acer Will Release Win 7 on October 23, 2009

Should you be worried about the July 1, 2010 "drop dead" date for Windows 7 RC, which was released today? Not according to Acer. In an interview with Pocket-Lint's Chris Hall, Bobby Watkins, Acer UK's Marketing Director, says that October 23, 2009 will be the day that Windows 7 will be available.Believable?
One comment from a US-based reader points out that October 23
On the other hand, the date falls comfortably before the holiday season (Microsoft missed the 2006 holiday season with Windows Vista). At any rate, Microsoft's hedging its bets: while the Windows 7 beta starts shutting down on July 1 2010 and quits completely on August 1 2010, Windows 7 RC will work well after the date Acer's claiming for RTM availability. (And, by the way, if you follow Will Smith's Twitter stream, you could have gotten your copy last night).
ATI needs to come out with a TV card driver for 7. I've had the same card I have now since about a week after I baught Vista. If they don't, Iwill be totally thru with ATI. Already I absolutely refuse to use an ATI video card because of stuff like this. Found an HDMI caputre card for $200 that will serve my purposes of wanting an HD signal tho.
If you've already been playing with Windows 7 RC, how close do you think it is to being ready to ship?

HP will help BlackBerry businesses?

HP CloudPrint for BlackBerry Smartphones, a Web-based technology slated to be shown at this week's Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Fla., lets users print e-mails, photos, documents, and Web pages from their BlackBerrys to the nearest printer, regardless of the printer manufacturer, HP said in a statement: "The service is printer-agnostic and driverless, and requires simple Internet access."
HP Operations Manager for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, also released Monday, is designed to enable companies to monitor and manage their BlackBerry enterprise environment. Managed BlackBerry Services, meanwhile, enables IT managers to outsource support of the BlackBerry environment to EDS Mobile Workplace Services, HP said.
"RIM and HP are working together to deliver solutions to customers that weave mobility into their daily operations--from innovative new services in the cloud to managed mobile services for the enterprise," Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion, said in a statement. "Through our collaboration with HP, businesses will have access to an expanded set of applications and services for their BlackBerry smartphone deployments."
Still not convinced that the RIM tax is justified. Windows Mobile does the same, for less. And without exchange, there is no point in a blackberry anyway. OK, maybe for the 10 people still running Notes or Groupwise.
What's your opinion?

Good News: Apple eyes Mac will cut price

Apple could be getting ready to cut prices on iMacs and MacBooks, according to a report.
Does Apple really have MacBook pricing cuts in mind?
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple plans to introduce less-expensive versions of its two most popular Macs at some point over the next several months. It's not clear how much of a cut Apple has in mind, or whether it plans to offer more value at current prices, but Apple has apparently decided that it wants to hedge its bets against a proliferation of cheap Netbooks over the last year or so, according to the report.
Mac pricing has certainly been a big topic over the last several months, as Microsoft has aggressively pushed the notion of the Mac as an expensive bauble unfit for recessionary spending. Apple responded to those ads with its standard message that Macs are more capable than PCs, therefore PCs aren't quite the bargain they appear to be.Times have changed since then. Apple's Mac shipments declined year-over-year for the first time in several years during its second fiscal quarter as certain PC vendors--such as Asus and Acer--improved their shipment totals on the back of cheap Netbooks.
If this move is really a response to the Netbook phenomenon, then I think it's a mistake. Netbooks provide a cheap basic computing experience, but whether they will turn into a long-term alternative to full-sized notebooks is far from certain.
IDC estimated that 11 million Netbooks were sold in 2008, and is predicting that 21 million will be sold in 2009, out of an overall worldwide PC market of around 300 million units. If those people are deciding to buy Netbooks simply because they are cheaper, then they probably weren't going to buy a Mac anyway. If they are buying them because they want that compact computing experience, they weren't going to buy a Mac either.
It's possible that Apple may just have promotional pricing in mind as it enters the educational buying season this quarter and the back-to-school buying season next quarter, two of the most important Mac sales periods of the year. Limited promotions could buy Apple some time to get its response to demand for a cheaper, more compact computer--the Mac minitablet--out the door while still preserving its Mac product line margins for a time when consumers are more confident.
Apple not only needs to lower costs because of the increasing volume of netbook sales, but also because Windows 7 is coming out this year and will be much more of a direct competitor than Vista or XP. In a competitive market, you have to price for the Delta between what yours does vs. theirs. Windows 7 will make existing Windows users remain Windows users. And it will beg the question of new users; Why choose Mac?
