Dell smartphone, more apathy

It's hard to tell if anyone is as enthused about the possibilities of Dell making a smartphone as Michael Dell. He's been making periodic references to his company making "small screen" devices in the near future at public appearances for the last year. But the people who watch his stock and analyze his company's every move, appear incredibly underwhelmed by the idea of a Dell handset. Their apathy is notable since a) Dell's last handheld device was very popular with consumers and b) Dell hasn't formally announced anything specific.
Again, Dell has not made any official announcement of a specific product. But the frequency or rumors about such a device is increasing. The latest appraisal came Tuesday from Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi Jr., who said that while there's potential for Dell to make some decent profits from a good handset--which could arrive "in the next six months"--he's not convinced Dell's execution will be all that graceful.
The company's track record in making devices other than PCs is "uninspiring," he wrote in a research note. "From an investment perspective, we do not believe it is appropriate to give Dell any credit (nor deduct any value) for its smartphone business. We'd rather take a wait-and-see approach."
In other words, Dell investors aren't ready to toast Michael Dell's smartphone just yet. There are plenty of reasons for them to be skeptical, chief among them being the company's ongoing restructuring and realignment of its core business. Sacconaghi points out that the smartphone business could be a "distraction" from the company's larger goal of improving its costs and establishing itself as a global PC brand and supplier of enterprise hardware and services.
There are rumors, however, that what Dell has come up with so far is not very exciting. Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Collins Stewart, panned the handset earlier this month--without seeing it, mind you--but based on feedback he heard from wireless carriers.
If it is trying to compete with the likes of Apple, Nokia, RIM, Palm, or even HTC, timing is key. By the time Dell releases this thing, whatever it may be, to make a decent impact in markets like the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and Europe, it would need to be a significant jump forward in what those guys are offering. Consumers aren't dumb and they're not just going to buy something because there's a Dell sticker on it, especially if it really is as far behind what's currently on the market as some are saying.
The problem with Dell these days is that the brand has been damaged so anything they produce will be met with skepticism. As this article states remember their last handheld device, the Dell Pocket DJ. Same goes for Microsoft and its rumored entry into the smartphone market. It's already being mocked as the "Zunephone". The cheap and good enough strategy doesn't appear to be working in the smartphone market at this time, possibly because smartphones require additional and relatively costly data plans to work. Therefore only those with some burnable cash are in the market (consumer) to buy one.
While there is no doubt that economy will suffer due to swine, it's not that money making opportunity will disappear altogether. In fact the outbreak will give rise to a new class of wealth creators, albeit for short period of time.

Reasons why children NEED laptops in the devoloping world

It has come to my attention as of late, that there are many who do not think One Laptop Per Child is a great idea. Some people will even go so far as to say that not every child need a laptop. here are a few questions and statements to ponder.
1. Are you aware of what not having a laptop will do to a childs self esteem?My brother said he knew a guy in college who did not have a laptop his freshman year and was very depressed. He never had a girlfriend because he could not keep a commintment to his facebook.
2. The argument that these kids need food before a laptop is foolish for two reasons.
1) You can grow food, but not laptops.
2) What is the point of living if you do not have access to technology that can make one's life more productive.
3) you can order food off the internet.
4) So what if children look at inappropriate sites? It's better than them buying a magizine and wasting paper.
5) Kids, are smart enough to know how to fix laptops when they break. I know my little brother is.
6) With laptops, good businesses like Starbucks will come.
7) Without a laptop, how will jids be able to learn about new music like Nervana and Elliot Smith.
8) The idea of having community computers is very dangerous. These computers will be monitered so kids will not have access to all websites.

Apple stayed the course

The worst recession in decades has had a limited effect on the consumer electronics powerhouse that is the modern-day Apple. The company's second-quarter earnings results shattered Wall Street expectations, despite a relatively weak quarter for the Mac, the rise of low-cost Netbooks, and the strong performance of iPhone rivals such as Research in Motion's BlackBerry.
As the economic situation has worsened, some analysts and observers have opined that Apple needs to embrace low-cost Macs and additional wireless carriers to keep its economic engine running. Apple COO Tim Cook would disagree.Cook can't say outright that Apple doesn't care about Mac market share; one, because it isn't entirely true, and two, because his marketing team will yell at him. But to a certain extent, Apple is indifferent to Mac market share: the PC wars are over, and Microsoft won a long time ago, as Steve Jobs himself said back in 1996. Apple has long chosen to position the Mac as "the best personal computer," not the mass-market personal computer.
Still, Cook pointed out that a lot of the market share gains in the U.S. made at Apple's expense have come as the result of the popularity of cheap Netbooks, which he described as having "cramped keyboards, terrible software, and junky hardware." Left unsaid was the worst thing about Netbooks--their profit margins compared with full-size notebooks--and while Cook refused to rule out entirely the prospect of Apple releasing a Netbook, he made it sound like Apple has different ideas in mind.
So, perhaps that's one shift in Apple's thinking over the last six months: the need to release a cheaper iPhone. With the Palm Pre set to make its debut this summer at a yet-to-be-announced price, and BlackBerry sales continuing to improve, Apple will need something to keep the iPhone going heading into its third year. Cook has said before that iPhone sales have increased every time Apple has lowered the price.
This was a big quarter for Apple. The company appeared to skate through a holiday season that left rivals shaken on the strength of its iPod division and retail group, and it wasn't at all clear that strength could continue. But while both Macs and Apple Retail took hits during the last three months, Apple continues to put up some of the most impressive numbers in the tech industry amid one of the worst downturns in tech history.
I think the PC v's Everyone Else including Mac WAR is back on. Apple should consider market share. It was only when others I knew started to show me how good they were and after my wife suggested I consider them that I realised how good they were. Without market share I would have not bothered. Without my wife wanting me to get a really small notebook I would not have bothered. Now a Mac user I look at myself and see one of those off with the cloud people praising every step of Apple. Its kind of embarrassing and I cop a whole bunch from my friends who are still PC users.

The price of laptops has dropped considerably over the past few years. Some of the top manufacturers are selling laptops at under $500, with specifications suitable for most users. But that doesn't mean you must buy it at that price, actually, you can still save some money on buying lower specification laptops.

Apple's New ads 'Get a Mac'

Apple released four new Get a Mac ads Monday, continuing its nearly 3-year-old campaign tweaking Windows PCs weeks after Microsoft began firing back at Apple. The new ads are available on Apple's Web site, and will no doubt flood the airwaves in due course. Apple is following its old playbook with the new spots, tweaking PC guy as played by John Hodgman as virus-prone, unstable, and difficult to use.
Apple makes a brief reference to that line of thinking in the "Stacks" ad, in which Mac guy (Justin Long) responds to PC guy's observation that the facial-recognition technology in the new iPhoto must be expensive by noting that it comes free with every new Mac. But otherwise it's the same old strategy of pushing the Mac as an easier-to-use and more reliable computer, with few references to price. One new twist is that a controversy has already sprung up over some of the claims in the "Legal Copy" ad.
Apple inserts a few slams at difficult-to-understand Windows components such as registry keys and virus-protection procedures, but also implies that some basic maintenance tips that apply to any computer, such as emptying the trash and downloading driver updates, are unique to the PC.
Still, the campaign's message seems to have had an impact over the past three years. While there's definitely something to be said for the "ain't broke, don't fix it" strategy, at some point Apple will need fresh ideas if Microsoft continues to hammer away with its own anti-Mac campaign.
The sad thing is, people who choose Mac actually care about their computer. No matter how many PCs running Windows I've seen, I've never seen anyone show any kind of emotion for it. Like Linux is for me, when a person uses OS X, the appreciation for it doesn't die after a day or two. I can't say the same about a Windows computer.

Ruby Red Acer Aspire Netbook Review

Did you noticed that Acer has just released a new netbook, it is AOD150-1920 10.1-Inch Netbook, and it is ruby red. If you didn't noticed that, let me give you some brief review.
One of the best features of this tiny little machine is its design. You may only waited this long to get your hands on a netbook because most of the netbooks in the market before the Acer Aspire One looks like a toy more like a laptop. The sleek design and professional looks of the Acer Aspire One AOD150 netbook has finally given me the nudge I needed to get onto the netbook bandwagon. I choose the Ruby Red model as I was looking for something edgy and load. This netbook is also available in shades of black, blue and white.
Then you must want to know the laptop battery, because it is so important for a laptop user. The laptop battery lifespan of the regular 4400 battery is about 4 hours. The new 6-cell 5800 mh battery that can last up to 8 hours of extended use on a single charge. The next must be the Windows XP home, this little notebook may seems to be much faster than many current laptops. It runs on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and has 1GB of RAM. Manufacturers are discovering that many users don’t care. Sales are up, and the category’s hot, with companies tripping over themselves to introduce new netbook models. Why? Many users seek simple devices they can use to access the Internet, send and receive e-mail, and edit basic office documents and spreadsheets. That’s it. They don’t need expensive features they’ll never really need or use. They just want access to the much heralded “cloud.”However, not every netbook is right for every user. So before you look for a netbook, pay attention to the following things:
Display size: Netbooks are designed to be small, lightweight, and portable. One significant tradeoff is screen size. Many of the most popular models feature only seven- or nine-inch screens. Your best bet, before committing to a purchase, is to test using a sample or evaluation unit at a local retailer. Otherwise, you may be underwhelmed when such a small box arrives in the mail.

Weight: Portability is the key with netbooks. Many of the most popular 8.9-inch display models weigh only two-and-a-half pounds or so. But some may sneak up on you. Rethink machines weighing more than three pounds — too many sub three-pound options are available for you to settle for needless deadweight.

Will Tax-free Online shopping Really Ended

If a little-known but influential alliance of state politicians, large retailers, and tax collectors have their way, the days of tax-free Internet shopping may be nearly over. A bill expected to be introduced in the U.S. Congress as early as Monday would rewrite the ground rules for mail order and Internet sales by eliminating what its supporters view as a "loophole" that, in many cases, allows Americans to shop over the Internet without paying sales taxes.
Currently, Americans who shop over the Internet from out-of-state vendors aren't always required to pay sales taxes at the time of purchase. Californians buying books from Amazon.com or cameras from Manhattan's B&H Photo, for example, won't pay sales taxes at checkout time that they would if shopping at a local mall. "
We will have the bill ready for introduction by next Monday," said Neal Osten of the National Conference of State Legislatures. "We finalized the language and now we're working out the remaining issues and adding some new provisions at the request of various stakeholders."
The final legislation is expected to be introduced by Sen. Mike Enzi, a Wyoming Republican, and Rep. Bill Delahunt, a Massachusetts Democrat, who have championed similar proposals in the past. Delahunt's office on Wednesday confirmed he was interested; Enzi's did not respond.
On the other side are the Direct Marketing Association, the Electronic Retailing Association, and companies including eBay. One of their biggest objections to the idea of collecting sales taxes on out-of-state shipments is the dizzying complexity of state laws.
Since 2003, more than 20 states have signed on, either wholly or partially, to the agreement, meaning they agree to simplify their tax codes and make them uniform. If enough states participate, proponents believe it will be easier to convince Congress to make sales collection mandatory for out-of-state retailers.

What's known about Dell's product? What if, for instance, it's a wide-reception WIFI-enabled VOIP phone that simply undermines the wireless business model? That would explain why carriers don't like it but Dell still has a degree of confidence going to market. Dell's usually a pretty shrewd operator. A few years ago its Axim devices were among the best pure PDAs, and at the best pricepoint as well.

According to an analyst report Monday,Whenever Dell does unveil its much-hinted-about new handset, it will apparently be taking a nontraditional route to the market.

Dell has decided to sell its new product through retailers only, Ashok Kumar of Collins Stewart said. While that's certainly interesting, and in line with Dell's recent record of testing new ways of approaching the market with its products, the reason Kumar gives is far more tantalizing: he says U.S. and European carriers were none too impressed with Dell's effort when the company tried to sign up some wireless partners during a meeting at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.

Dell hasn't responded to a request for comment. But if Kumar's claims are true, this presents serious problems for Dell. The company already has relationships with some of the major carriers, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless, to sell wireless-service plans for its notebooks and Netbooks in the United States and in Europe. Rejecting what will, by its very nature, be a high-profile product from a current business partner doesn't speak very well of the product's competitiveness.

Having been rejected from the major carriers will also handicap the device from the start, since U.S. consumers are conditioned to buying subsidized phones and may balk at paying a full price. But the bigger problem is that there's just not that much market share left to grab, especially without the marketing might of large carriers behind it. Another report on Monday says Dell is in talks with China Mobile to develop a partnership for its device in China. If a partnership pans out, Dell's phone could launch in China by the end of the year, according to Zhang Jun, an analyst at research firm Wedge MKI. In such a scenario, Dell's device would use Open Mobile System, China Mobile's operating system, which is based on Google's Android, he wrote.

Dell has been targeting the Chinese market heavily in the past year with its PC products. The country is now Dell's second-largest market overall. On a recent trip through Asia, company founder and Chief Executive Michael Dell addressed rumors of an upcoming handheld product, saying, "It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that we would have smaller mobile Internet devices or smartphones in the future."

Companies should concentrate on what theyre good at. Dell keep making reasonably priced-high quality PC's. Leave that to others unless you have a product that is new to the market.

For many years, laptop makers were concentrating completely on function and not at all on form. All the while, Dell was making sexy laptops, and the PC OEMs assumed Dell would never be a threat.
Gizmodo summarized its review of the Adamo by saying: "Just don't dare buy this computer until Dell comes to their senses and realizes that $2,000+ is absurd for a 4-pound laptop with no graphics muscle."
Though I think Gizmodo misses the mark about "graphics muscle" (ultraportables are not designed or marketed as graphics powerhouses, or anything close to it), the reviewer is right about price--and high price implies cachet. Only Apple can command the kind of cachet that demands $2,500 for a high-end laptop (i.e., the MacBook Air). But there's a greater force conspiring against the Dell Adamo and even the Apple MBA: the Netbook.
High-end Netbooks, like the just-announced 11.6-inch Acer Aspire One, are priced well below $700, making it hard to plop down $2,700 for the 1.4GHz Adamo. Yes, the four-pound Dell is a stunning, superior design (0.65-inches thick, machined-aluminum chassis) with better hardware (Core 2 processor, 128GB solid-state drive standard, 13.4-inch 16:9 HD display with edge-to-edge glass) . But is it $2,000 better? In the age of the two-pound $500 "luxury" Netbook, definitely not.
And it's going to get worse. The Netbook's cousin-to-be, the cheap ultraportable, is going to make things even more uncomfortable for the Adamos of the world. A wave of $500-$900 ultrathin MacBook Air-like laptops are expected this summer. If these become popular, they will not only threaten the Adamo but possibly Netbooks too.
Well, now the OEMs realize that they can't ignore form any more. So it doesn't specifically matter if the Adamo is a success or a failure or is overpriced or if it hasn't got the best GPU. All that matters is that Dell has made a very serious commitment to improving the design of their laptops. Adamo is merely the first result of that -- there will be many more. Dell will find the right niche/price/performance balance eventually. But at least they will now have options for people who do want some style from their computers.
Maybe it is good that Dell finally (finally!) decided to remove head from rectum in the design department. Same with HP. They still have a long way to go, but it is good to see them at least trying to move in the right direction.
