Acer become number two PC maker?

Interesting piece in the New York Times today about Acer -- the company is about to ride the tidal wave of netbooks and other el-cheapo computers straight to the number two spot on the PC sales chart. That's a big deal -- no non-US company has ever made it so high -- and it's interesting that the strategies Acer took to get there are the same things Dell's been trying to do lately: it's heavy on low-cost, stylish laptops and netbooks, it keeps inventory extremely lean, and it relies on an extensive set of retail partnerships in Europe.
What's more, the Aspire One has been the best-selling netbook for a while now, and we'd say Acer's way out in front of the CULV thin-and-light race with the Timeline -- in fact, we'd say the only open question here is whether the company can take all this computing success and translate it to something worthwhile in the smartphone space. Based on what we've seen so far, we've got our doubts, but we'll see what those super-secret Android sets look like before we place our bets.
They can easily do it considering where Dell is focusing themselves. Most consumers are finally tired of buying expensive laptops and having to upgrade every few years. While Dells so focused on building crappy expensive versions of MBA w/ Adamo, Acer's pull is cheap & convenience. With stores like Walmart backing the product I can see more people having Acers for just net surfing and easy Office work.

PC sales will rise by end of the year

Market research analyst firm Gartner predicts that the fourth quarter of this year will bring the beginning of a rebound that will gain momentum next year. With a stronger fourth quarter, the industry is on pace to move 274 million PCs worldwide this year. While that's still a 6 percent drop from last year's total shipments of 292 million units, it's not as bad as once thought. Earlier this year, Gartner was predicting a 9.2-percent decline for the year.
Gartner says next year's shipments will swing into positive territory, predicting growth of 10.3 percent. But its analysts say it's too soon to assume the worst is over. People are still delaying purchases while the overall economic outlook remains uncertain.
Customers will begin buying again, but not until later this year, and picking up through 2010 and 2011, according to Gartner Research Director George Shiffler. He also cautioned that the first wide availability of Windows 7 won't spur as many new sales as may be expected.
On Wall Street, there is a phenomenon known as a "dead cat bounce." A dead cat bounce occurs the day after a stock completely crashes: it gains a few points. The reason for this term is that even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from high enough.

IBM water-cooled superlaptop

IBM and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich plan to build a water-cooled supercomputer whose surplus heat will be re-used to heat the university's buildings. The Aquasar supercomputer will be located at the ETH Zurich facility, and it will start operations next year, the partners said in an announcement on Tuesday.
The supercomputer will combine two rack-mounted IBM BladeCenter servers, each containing multiple blades with a mixed population of IBM PowerXCell 8i and Intel Nehalem processors. It is expected to deliver a peak performance of about 10 teraflops.
The installation will re-use heat directly for in-building heating. IBM estimates that the wate-rcooling scheme will reduce the system's carbon footprint by up to 85 percent and save up to 30 tons of carbon dioxide annually, compared with standard cooling approaches. The comparison calculations are based on average yearly operation of the system and on in-building heating energy being produced by fossil fuels, the company said.
The system is the product of an extended joint research project between ETH and IBM scientists, focused on chip-level water-cooling. It also encompasses a concept for "water-cooled data centers with direct energy re-use" proposed by scientists at IBM's Zurich Lab.
Aquasar's use of warm water rather than cold water for cooling is unique and IBM-patented, a spokesman for the company said. Water, which is about 4,000 times more efficient as a coolant than air, will enter the system at 60 degrees C. This will keep the chips in the system at operating temperatures below their maximum of 85 degrees C, according to IBM.

How to Repair your HP Pavilion DV9000 keyboard

Step 3: Place the rubber spring piece. If your HP Pavilion DV9000 keyboard is missing the rubber spring piece, place it in the center, with the large end down. It will be held in place by the surrounding hinge bracket in a moment. When the HP Pavilion DV9000 keyboard pops free from both edges, pull it toward you at an angle, releasing the rear of the HP laptop keyboard from the laptop.
Step 4: Replacing the Dell Inspiron 1525 Battery is the opposite, remembering to press firmly on the center of the HP Pavilion DV9000 keyboard (around the trackpoint) to ensure the connector is seated properly.
