Building Your Perfect Desktop with Samurize

One of the best ways to set your computer apart from the pack is to customize your desktop. There are numerous ways to do this that range in difficulty from as easy as changing your wallpaper to as involved as a full-blown shell replacement. Somewhere in between, there’s Samurize.
Samurize is a program that lets you create and run custom desktop widgets, most commonly used for system monitoring. Because Samurize is extremely customizable, it’s a favorite tool of desktop modders who use it in conjunction with tailor-made wallpapers to create truly awesome personal desktops. Learning Samurize can be a fun project, because although there’s a lot of depth to the program and it takes practice and an artistic eye to make top-notch widgets, you can get started right away building simple meters and displays. Here we explain the basics of Samurize, including what you need to know to build your first simple custom widget.
Once you’ve installed the program, you have the option of running Samurize or the Config tool. Samurize is what you’ll eventually use to display your custom desktops, but for now, start the Config tool. Configs define the widgets that Samurize places on your desktop, and can include meters (which represent any of a number of system parameters) and graphics. By combining informative meters, sharp graphics, and a matching wallpaper, you can create a desktop that’s both useful and impressive.
That’s the goal, at least. But you’ve got to learn to walk before you can run, so this article will explain how to use Samurize to create a basic Config with CPU and RAM usage monitors as well as a gauge for either your laptop battery or hard disk space. It might not be the sexiest feature set in the world, but by learning how to make this simple Config, you’ll familiarize yourself with the basics of Samurize, allowing you to design more complicated and impressive desktops in the future.

Fujitsu: New Rig with "German Ultra Clocking" Will be "Fastest Ever"

Fujitsu is said to be working on the “fastest rig on the planet.” While it is very common for car ads to heap praise on German engineering, the same is not true when it comes to PCs. But a slide (see below) related to the upcoming “fastest rig on the planet” is a laconic ode to German engineering.
The slide credits “German ultra clocking” for making Fujitsu’s mysterious gaming rig the fastest in the world. It also mentions that the rig features the very best “hand selected components”. Fujitsu posted a link to a teaser video - which miraculously doesn’t make even a thickly veiled reference to the gaming rig – on Twitter.
And the Germans dont have ANY name for them selvs in the computer world. Just because their over glorifyed in the auto world doesnt mean shit in computer land, its not like they created their own x86 octo-cores to compeate with intel or amd. They dont have access to any tech that no one else in the world does. And "ultra clocking" is still the same stupid fake imaginary term it was when they called it "super clocking" the last 50 times we all heard it.

Apple owns the U.S. retail PC market

According to NPD, 91 percent of all computers sold at retail for more than $1,000 were Macs. That marked a slight increase from the 88 percent in May. But Apple officially owns that market, and it appears the price cuts across its MacBook Pro lineup introduced in early June helped. On Tuesday, Apple announced that it sold 13 percent more Macs during April, May, and June of this year than the same period a year ago, despite the recession and price-conscious consumers.
Of course, all the computers Apple sells--with the exception of the $999 white plastic MacBook and the Mac Mini desktop--are more than $1,000, so they should own that market. NPD's numbers do not include specialty gaming PCs that enthusiasts usually customize and buy online, which can be well over $1,000. But, as NPD analyst Stephen Baker points out, two-thirds of all computers are sold at retail, so the numbers paint a comfortably accurate picture of what's going on in the PC market.
That would seem to justify Apple COO Tim Cook's comments on his company's earnings call earlier this week, where he pretty much said Apple would never make a Netbook because the company doesn't think it can make a quality notebook for $400 or $500. ("We're going to focus on what we've always done.
Until the cheaper MacBook Pros came out in June, retail data in the U.S. showed Apple notebook sales growth was actually declining from February through May, which helps explain the price cuts.
But Baker believes that even if Apple doesn't do a Netbook, "sooner rather than later" Apple will need to come down to $799 for its lowest-end notebook if it wants to continue to grow its market share. And, he says, there's precedent at Apple in this area.

Samsung Produces 40nm DDR3 for Desktops

Samsung's shrunken chip technology will first be used in a 1GB DDR2-800 SO-DIMM module and has been validated for Intel's GM45 platform. The company also said it plans to apply its 40nm technology to develop a 2Gbit DDR3 device for mas production by the end of the year.
Back in February of this year, Samsung developed and validated its first 40nm DRAM chip, and now five months later, the chip maker announced it has begun mass producing 2Gb DDR3 using the smaller manufacturing process.
Samsung says the move to 40nm will provide around a 60 percent increase in production capacity over a 50nm process, and it won't all be relegated to the server market, according to news and rumor site DigiTimes. In addition to 16GB, 8GB, and 4GB RDIMMs for servers, Samsung will use the 40nm manufacturing process to build UDIMMs (unregistered in-line memory modules) for workstatios, desktops, and notebooks of up to 4GB.
The energy efficient chips support a data rate of up to 1.6Gbps at just 1.35V, double that of an 800Mbps 1Gb-based dual-die package.

Will Apple sue Microsoft?

A few days ago Microsoft revealed that Apple’s lawyers had contacted them regarding the laptop hunter ads, and that they requested the entire campaign be pulled from airwaves. To most non Microsoft sized companies this would be a serious threat, but so far the boys in Redmond are undeterred by Apple’s legal posturing and are actually trying to use it to their advantage. Apple’s primary complaint is that some of the ads feature out of date comparison information that changed when Apple refreshed its hardware lineup and dropped its prices at WWDC in June.
The inconsistencies are fairly minor and ultimately don’t change the message they were trying to deliver, but do you believe Apple would ever actually try to sue Microsoft? Cnet speculated that any type of legal action would only harm Apples reputation, and would help to give Microsoft the creditability it needs to keep winning back the hearts and minds of the value conscious consumers. Pulling advertisements because the claims are no longer accurate isn’t unprecedented, but would it harm Apple’s case more than it would help if they pressed the issue?
Apple's complaint is that A (note the singular) commercial has ONE computer of theirs that most certainly DID have said pricing at the time of the filiming of the commercial, which anyone with the least bit of competence knows will take at least weeks if not months before airing, and on top of that computer technology is routinely changing. But Apple's assertion is that M$ (who I bare no love for mind you) is purposely misrepresenting the facts of the matter?
How about Apple's entire "Macs are cooler than God" campaign, where every single selling point was based on either out right lies or claims that wouldn't have been accurate in 2001, much less now. M$ felt no need to say anything to Apple about their gross misrepresentation(s) in an entire ad campaign because anyone that knew anything about the matter knew Apple is/was full of "bovine fecal matter" and were just stabbing in the dark trying to pretend like they are relevant.

Wireless keyboard with built-in touchpad review

Well, it may not quite match the likes of Logitech's diNovo edge in either form or function, but this new wireless keyboard from Miyoshi does nonetheless pack all the basics, and a slightly lower price tag than some of its competitors.
That includes, as you can see above, a somewhat curiously placed touchpad, along with all the usual media-specific keys, a slider control of some sort, and full 2.4GHz wireless capabilities to make it a bette fit for your HTPC setup. No word on a release 'round here just yet, but it looks like folks in Japan can pick this one up now for ¥9,980, or just over $100.
The advantage of a trackpad centered below the keyboard is to minimize hands motion, putting it all the way to the right is pointless... especially for left-handed people.

The 99-Cent Netbook review released by Sprint

A $1 netbook sounds like a Third World fantasy. Ironically, such a netbook has become a reality in the US. Sprint and Best Buy have combined forces to sell the Compaq Mini 110c-1040DX Netbook for 99 cents.
The only caveat being that interested persons will have to opt for a two-year service contract with Sprint Nextel, which costs $1,440 and offers 5GB of data.
The same netbook, which features a 1.60GHz Intel Atom processor, 10-inch screen and 160 HDD, is also being offered by AT&T and Verizon along with a two-year contract for $199. Its actual price is $389.
Remember around 10 years ago or so when you could buy a super cheap or practically free computer from Best Buy or Circuit City? Remember the catch was you had to sign a 2 year ISP contract for $30+ a month dial up? Remeber how lame that was? Well, apparently everybody forgot because here we go again. Of course the wireless companies have always done that and are still doing it. Here's a free phone but you have to sign a contract for the service.

Intel-based Thin Laptops Plagued with Design Flaws?

Doug Freedman, an analyst for Broadpoint AmTech, has revealed to Cnet that early production units of ultra-thin laptops, which are being made out of plastic, are fissuring due to design flaws. He gleaned this information from his discussions with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs).
Freedman believes manufacturers will have to ultimately “go with a metal case” to achieve that ultra-thin form factor they are after. However, the use of metal cases will make ultra-thin notebooks costlier.
A reference to Intel’s CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) technology – meant for ultra-thin notebooks - in Freedman’s report elucidating the design issues prompted Intel to clarify that the “case design issues reported to be found by an ODM, not consumers, in early production units for ultra-thin laptops have nothing to do with Intel processors whatsoever.”
Freedman had said that some manufacturers are more interested in manufacturing 11-inch and 12-inch netbooks with the Atom processor rather than ultra-thin notebooks with Intel’s CULV technology.
