More Notebooks to Adopt Blu-ray Drives

There aren't a ton of affordable notebooks out there that come with a Blu-ray drive as a standard accessory. And if sources behind the scenes at makers of optical drives turn out to be true in their predictions, don't expect to see many Blu-ray based notebooks until the second half of 2010.
As has always been the case with Blu-ray, price is the prohibiting factor. According to DigiTimes, a slim-type Blu-ray drive costs about $100, while a slim DVD burner can be had for just $20, or five times less. It doesn't take a math or business major to crunch the numbers and see which one makes more sense.
By the second half of 2010, however, sources say Bu-ray drives are expected to drop. While they didn't say by how much, the general consensus is that you'll be seeing a lot more notebooks equipped with Blu-ray drives than you do today.
In the meantime, there's still the high-end sector, which now includes Intel's Core i7 processors. Toshiba, for example, recently announced the Qosmio X500 series, which sport both a Blu-ray drive and Intel's new mobile Core i7 parts.
The price is the main reason I haven't added a Blu-Ray drive component to my Wide-screen Compaq laptop or 360. But hey, if your willing to overlook the price then whatever floats your boat. & if you look at it another way, if SONY would have given people an option to include a "Blu-Ray" player like Microsoft then they would have been able to lower their price range even further to compete & it would have been more affordable from the get go.

Multitouch screen keyboard for Microsoft

Oh, those smart rascals at Microsoft are on a roll. I love their Courier tablet concept, and now they may have found the way to make on-screen multitouch keyboards actually work great--even for touch typists like me.
The problem with screen keyboards is that you actually have to look at the screen to hit the keys correctly. With real keyboards, touch typists have a physical reference to position their hands. That's why they type blind. With a flat screen keyboard, however, you lose the physical reference frame.
The patent for this screen keyboard, however, uses multitouch technology to automatically align the keys to the position of the hand. Since the keys are always in the same relative position to your fingers, you will always have a physical point of reference: Your own hand. That way, you can blindingly hammer your keys against the screen, knowing that your fingers will always hit the keys they are aiming for.
The patent also details the way this virtual keyboard would appear anywhere on the screen: Just place your hands as you would normally do while typing, and the keyboard will pop up.
Keyboards are around today and there isn't any thing in the offering currently for development that is likely to change this any time soon, no matter what you like to say... again and again and again. Somehow I don't think Apple is going to stop allowing keyboards to be used on their systems simply because you have decided that they are passe.
At least for the next twenty years or so, the keyboard is here to stay. You can say whatever you want about voice being the next wave, but do you really want to be in a room full of people typing by talking to their computers? I can't even imagine the computer labs in my school's library which are supposed to be silent. Hopefully they still make computers that have keyboards so that I can do things like type quietly, have a conversation while using my computer, not have to say out loud what I'm writing. That would get pretty old.

Lithium ion battery maker A123 Systems had a rousing

The Watertown, Mass.-based company, which was spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, saw its share prices rise over 50 percent from its offering price to close at over $20. A123 Systems' battery platform is being used for power tools, transportation, and power grid energy storage.
Through the initial public offering, the company is expected to raise over $400 million, Reuters reported. It had initially hoped to net $250 million but adjusted its offering price to raise more. A123 Systems' IPO has been closely watched in the green tech community because it is one of only a few energy-related companies started this decade to go public. It currently supplies batteries for power tools and has built large, megawatt-scale batteries for utilities.
It's also eyeing the automotive sector, a potentially much larger market. A123 Systems received a $249.1 million grant from the Department of Energy to build a lithium ion battery packs factory in Michigan as part of a $2.4 billion investment in the plug-in electric car supply chain.
A123 Systems' IPO was the second most successful of the year, Reuters reported. A123 initially filed to go public in August of 2008.
Although it was a strong IPO, some energy storage experts say that lithium ion batteries, which will be used in a number of upcoming plug-in electric vehicles, need to come down in costs significantly for electric cars to be more mainstream.

IBM launches new Netbook software

With traditional computers often too pricey, many businesses in Africa have opted instead to equip their employees with low-cost Netbooks. The IBM Client for Smart Work takes advantage of that trend by providing a collection of open-source software specifically for Netbooks and other thin clients, said IBM.
Running on Canonical's Ubuntu Linux operating system, the package offers open-standards-based e-mail, word processing, a spreadsheet application, communication tools, and social-networking features. In addition, users can collaborate with each other through a cloud-computing model. IBM said the package can also work on virtual desktops using the VERDE system from Virtual Bridges, which will be available through business partners.
"Businesses in emerging markets are looking to gain the freedom and flexibility afforded by open standards," said Bob Picciano, general manager for IBM Lotus Software. "The IBM Client for Smart Work builds on the movement toward open standards and Web-based personal computing by giving people the power to work smarter, regardless of device."
IBM said that a network of local providers will offer the software package to governments, schools, and businesses throughout Africa. IBM will also work with universities to spread the software to the academic community.
Along with the new package, Big Blue will offer a subscription to LotusLive.com starting at $10 per month. The LotusLive network will let businesses connect with partners, suppliers, and customers through file sharing, virtual meetings, instant messaging, and social networking. With a focus on health care, IBM will also provide a voice computing option whereby a doctor can access the Smart Work package by voice to better collaborate with other medical professionals from remote locations.
Although the windows Starter edition doesn't now limit the amount of apps running I think this Initiative is taking the prospect of emerging markets more seriously at present than what seems to be Microsoft's current standing(things can change).

MSI Wind U110 ECO Boasts Long Battery Life

MSI on Monday announced a new netbook called the Wind U110 ECO, which we had previously heard would come with ATI graphics inside, but that isn't the case. Instead, MSI opted to roll with Intel's GMA500 graphics chipset, a less powerful trade off that, when combined with the 9-cell battery, helps contribute to the claimed 15+ hours of battery life.
Other now familiar specs include a 10-inch 1024x600 display, Intel Atom Z530 processor (1.6GHz), 1GB of DDR2-533MHz, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, a 1.3MP webcam, GbE LAN, three USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 card reader, a built-in mic, and a blu-ray burner (Sike! Just seeing if you were paying attention).
In terms of portability, the newest Wind measures just 1.24 inches at its widest point and weighs 3.2 pounds while lugging the 9-cell battery pack.
Notebook manufacturers might be finding it difficult to separate themselves from the competition in what has become an extremely crowded netbook market. It's gotten to the point where we can recite a netbook press release without having ever read it - Atom processor, solid-state drive (SSD) or hard drive, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP or Linux, and so forth. So how do you stand out from the crowd?
If you're MSI, you release a new BIOS that offers overclocking controls. With the v1.09 BIOS released this week, Wind owners can push their Wind netbook's Atom N270 processor in increments of 8 percent, 15 percent, and 24 percent over the stock speed. As is always the case with overclocking, you'll have to analyze the risk-to-reward ratio, and according to ElectricVagabond.com, the reward of a 24 percent overclock can equate to as much as a 30 percent increase in performance.

HP and Dell Working on 3D Gaming Notebooks

There is a general feeling that the world is inching toward the next big leap in display technology: 3D displays. According to an estimate, the market for 3D displays is expected to be worth $15.8 billion by 2015, a figure that can only be achieved with a compound annual growth rate of 95%. This leap in display technology will straddle a wide gamut of devices and form factors.
Now, according to Taiwanese trade publication Commercial Times, HP and Dell have placed orders for 3D notebooks with original design manufacturer (ODM) Wistron. The same ODM is also said to be in talks with Sony and Lenovo. The report went on to add that Wistron’s patented 3D technology ensures that the cost of its 3D notebooks doesn’t exceed that of ordinary notebooks by much.
the world of desktop monitors, 3D displays are arguably the “next big thing.” It stands to reason, given the plummeting cost of LCDs and the subsequent glut of these panels on the market. The dropping costs help spur more-advanced LCD tech, and more-advanced LCD tech might be just what manufacturers need to stand out in a jam-packed market. Three-dimensional displays lure PC enthusiasts—particularly gamers—with the promise of a more immersive experience.
That is, until a gamer actually uses one. At least that’s been the case in our limited experience. The screens that require a user to wear special polarizing glasses aren’t even worth mentioning, but their successors—the LCDs that have a polarizing layer built into the display (to perform the same function as the glasses)—haven’t been much more practical. Take for example, Sharp’s 3D displays, which garnered a lot of attention when they were released in 2004. Like the screens that required glasses, and even the goggle-style wearable displays, a 3D image is created out of two near-identical images shown from slightly different viewpoints—to mimic the way your eyes work. In Sharp’s displays, a “parallax barrier” polarizes light so that each eye sees only the part of the stereoscopic image it’s meant to see. Your mind does the rest of the work, stitching together the two views into one three-dimensional rendering.

HP's purchase of Opsware

HP announced the appointment, effective immediately, on Thursday. In a statement, HP's chairman and CEO Mark Hurd described Andreessen as "a software pioneer whose leadership has helped shape the Internet...Marc's entrepreneurial background and industry expertise will be a welcome addition to the HP board of directors."
Andreessen and HP's relationship goes back several years, culminating with HP's purchase of Opsware for $1.6 billion in 2007. Since then, Andreessen, best known as the co-founder of Netscape, has helmed social network creation service Ning, and a new venture capital firm Andreessen-Horowitz. He also sits on the boards of eBay and Facebook.
HP offered $14.25 per share in cash, a 38 percent premium over the company's share price on Friday. Figuring in Opsware's existing cash and debt, the deal is valued at $1.6 billion. The company said the acquisition, following the $4.5 billion purchase of Mercury Interactive one year ago, is part of HP's strategy of offering a comprehensive software line for managing corporate data centers.
"The addition of Opsware is expected to enhance HP's standing as one of the world's leading software companies and drive profitable growth for HP," Ann Livermore, executive vice president of HP's Technology Solutions Group, said in a statement.
After the transaction, which is expected to be completed in HP's fourth quarter, Opsware CEO Ben Horowitz will lead HP's Business Technology Optimization organization, reporting to HP Software senior vice president Thomas Hogan. HP also announced that it intends to buy Neoware in a cash deal. Subtracting Neoware's cash from the offer price, the deal is worth $214 million, according to HP.
Neoware makes thin client and virtualization software for centralizing management of corporate desktop computers. The software will be combined into the business desktop unit of HP's PC business and will boost the company's Linux business, HP said.

Asus will Join the Home Server Market?

It still hasn’t been formally announced yet, but if these Chinese shaky cam photos are to be believed, Asus might soon be following Acer into the Windows home server market.
The new Asus Mini TS is about 600 MHz faster than the Acer easyStore unveiled back in May, but the trade off is two fewer internal SATA slots. This drawback might not be as bad as it sounds however because it cuts down on the bulk of the device, and the 6 USB 2.0 slots, and 2 eSATA ports might actually make it a better option for some.
So far Asus hasn’t confirmed the authenticity of the photos which leads us to believe if these pictures are legit, it’s likely still in the prototype phase meaning it won’t hit store shelves until 2010. If you’re looking for a portable home server option in the future however, this might be one to watch.
Acer's new easyStore Home Server has made its way to the U.S. in a cool looking cube and sporting Microsoft's Windows Home Server, as well as 1TB of backup storage from the get-go.
"The trend of multiple computer devices per household continues to grow, particularly with regard to mobility. A significant pain point for consumers is how to consolidate and protect their digital data that's spread among multiple devices," said Sumit Agnihotry, Vice President of Product Marketing for Acer America. "Aspire easyStore is the ideal solution for networking home PCs and providing round the clock data protection. Offering remote access to digital data at home from anywhere in the world and automatic daily back-ups, it's the perfect companion to netbooks and notebooks. It's an extremely practical and affordable way to simplify and manage one's personal digital life."

Samsung and Toshiba Increase Capacity of 2.5-inch Drives

Both Samsung and Toshiba recently announced that they’d be among the first to release 2.5-inch 640GB hard drives for the mobile market. Samsung’s new 640GB 2.5-inch Spinpoint M7 internal drive has a density of 516-Gigabit per square inch for each of the 320GB platters, which is a 28 percent increase per platter over it’s previous record setting 500GB internal drive. The density change allowed Samsung to up the storage capacity without adding additional platters.
On September 2nd Toshiba began shipping out their new sample 640GB 2.5-inch drive to OEMs and distributors. Given its density of 817.0 Mbit/mm2, the new drive will bring performance improvements over their previous generation of 5,400RPM drives, and will lower energy consumption by 28 percent.
The app store bug appears to have mutated into something highly contagious. Another smartphone maker has avowedly contracted this bug. Samsung has announced its plans to launch a mobile app store in Europe. The Samsung Application Store will be launched in the UK, France and Italy on September 14.
Only Omnia and I8910 HD users will be able to access the app store when it debuts. Access to the app store will eventually be expanded to more than 30 countries and a couple more Omnia devices. Similarly, the company hopes the app count will rise from 300 at launch to 2,000 by the end of 2009. Samsung claims its latest venture has the backing of some major app providers, including Electronic Arts, Capcom, Gameloft, TAITO, and Paragon SW.

Toshiba Shows Off Prototype

If there's one thing most touchscreen tablets all have in common, it seems to be the overall sex appeal, and Toshiba's new JournE touch multimedia tablet is no exception.
While the 7-inch touchscreen steals the show, beneath the surface Toshiba's sleek JournE suports a number of codecs, including H.264, DivX, and WMV. It also adds 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi support, multimedia and social app integration, and IE running on Windows CE 6.0 Pro.
It also comes with an HDMI port in the unit's dock and can output HD video. As this is a prototype, final specifications are likely to change, and there's no word yet on price or availability.
Toshiba made few sacrifices when building this rig. The Tecra boasts an Intel Pentium M 760 running at 2GHz, a PCI Express GeForce Go 6600 TE, and a double-layer DVD burner. Sure, we’d love to see another 512MB of memory push the total system RAM to a gig, but for the price, we can’t complain too much.
Thanks to the 14.1-inch screen and a 1400x1050 native resolution, the Tecra surpasses all the other Tablets we’ve tested in terms of resolution and clarity. And thanks to the integration of Wacom’s market-leading pen-input technology, the screen’s sensor delivers better accuracy and better pressure sensitivity, in our experience. Your cursor goes exactly where you touch the screen! This might not seem like a particularly difficult task, but many Tablets we’ve tested in the past exhibit spotty calibration.
The Tecra’s benchmark numbers are good for this class of notebook, although its performance pales in comparison with our zero-point rig—Dell’s latest XPS gaming notebook. This Tablet certainly won’t replace a desktop rig for heavy lifting—gaming or video encoding—but it can hold its own in typical office tasks, as our Photoshop and Premiere scripts show.
There are tons of small features that really highlight Toshiba’s expertise in building laptops. We love being able to choose between the touchpad and the eraser nub for cursor control, as each is suited to different tasks. The integrated SD-card reader makes it easy to pull photos from your digicam, and the included speakers sound pretty good, at least compared with other integrated laptop speakers.

HP and Acer to Significantly Ramp Up Notebook Shipments

Consumers aren't the only ones anxiously awaiting the release of Windows 7; OEMs are planning ahead as well. Anticipating a sharp rise in demand, HP has an ordered about 3.3 million notebooks from Taiwan's top-four ODMs last month, representing an increase of 15 percent on month. In September, that number number is expected to climb even higher and settle on 3.5 million units, industry sources say.
Meanwhile, Acer also anticipates a flurry of sales once Windows 7 is made available starting October 22, 2009. Those same sources indicate Acer has a real shot at becoming the leader in the notebook market this fall, with shipments possibly topping 3.6 million units. This also includes ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks, two areas Acer has been particularly popular in.
If Acer manages to ship nine million notebooks in the third quarter, it will have closed the gap with HP to only 200,000 units.
Don't worry, no one is asking you to commit to three years of AOL on a 56K connection. Instead, HP is considering selling netbooks for a significant discount when bundled with a wireless service contract. While a new concept in the U.S., cellular service providers are already doing this in Asia and Europe. One such example is Taiwanese carrier Far EasTone Communications Ltd., who sells an Asus Eee PC for a scant $29 with a two-year commitment.
