Netbook shipments still on rising

More than 38 million Netbooks shipped in the second quarter of 2009, helping them capture a 22.2 percent share of the portable PC market, according to a report released Monday from DisplaySearch.
Quarterly demand for Netbooks, or mini-note PCs, jumped 40 percent over the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch's latest "Quarterly PC Shipment and Forecast Report." This surge contrasts with notebook shipments, which grew 22 percent over the same period.
Former Netbook pioneer Asus has been losing sales to other manufacturers, notes the report. Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba have all jumped into the mini market with their own offerings. The lower price of Netbooks has helped them win a bigger market share over notebooks in Latin America and China, notes DisplaySearch. These regions have many first-time PC buyers bypassing notebooks with lots of bells and whistles in favor of simpler but cheaper Netbooks.
Netbook makers can also thank telecommunications providers, who have been subsidizing mini-note PCs to lure customers. In many Western European countries, telecom companies subsidize 100 percent of the Netbook's price tag when customers sign up for a two-year data plan, says DisplaySearch. Cable providers have also gotten into the act, offering heavily-discounted Netbooks for people who sign up for cable TV, Internet, and phone service.
Consumers who purchase netbooks know exactly what they're getting, and a majority of them already own a desktop or higher-end laptop. They purchase a netbook as an accessory, something to carry around that weighs a pound or two and has internet connectivity on the go via wi-fi or 3G. It is much easier and simpler to lug around a 2 pound netbook than carry around a 15 inch, 6 pound behemoth. On college campuses, netbooks are the rage. They're everywhere.

Dell, and HP are Predicting a Tech Recovery for the end of 2009

Stronger than expected demand for microprocessors has prompted Intel to raise its Q3 forecast from $8.1 billion to $9.2 billion, and the good news is they aren’t the only ones predicting better times ahead. Both HP and Dell are forecasting Q3 revenues to rise, though this news comes hot on the heels of disappointing year to date earnings.
On Thursday, Dell reported a 23 percent drop in Q2 profit, but still managed to beat the street estimates. CEO Michael Dell claims, “if current demand trends continue, we expect revenue for the second half of the year to be stronger than the first half”. Rival Hewlett-Packard reported a similarly depressing drop in profit of 19 percent for the first half of the year, but is also expecting the trend to reverse itself soon.
The PC Industry is expected to benefit from the economic stimulus package in China, as well as what appears to be the start of an economic recovery in the U.S. Windows 7 is also expected to help move PCs in the consumer sector, but businesses will likely put off upgrading for at least a year or more.
As for it's core line of procs, it's not that they are selling more, it's that they are charging more for them upping the bottom line a bit. I can't say much for Dell or HP as I don't follow them that close because as I don't buy thier products.
According to a new study released by the Cleantech group, even though the Kindle’s environmental impact upfront was significant, the numbers drop dramatically over the devices lifespan. They say the Kindle can produce savings up to a 26,098 kg of CO2 if used to it’s fullest capacity, or 1,074 kg if it replaces a mere three books per month. The break-even point in terms of environmental impact is if your Kindle replaces 22.5 books.

IBM Details Octo-Core Power7 Processor

The CPU wars in the desktop market have grown pretty stale with Intel's Core i7 architecture kicking AMD's tail, but when it comes to the server sector, the battle is starting to heat up.
Enter IBM, who at this week's Hot Chips conference officially unveiled its muscular 8-core Power7 processor. The mighty chip is expected to pack 1.2 billion transistors onto a 45nm die. Each core will boast 12 execution units, as well as 32 threads per chip and advanced pre-fetching data and instruction sets.
"I am sure Power7 will be the fastest processor around, probably faster than Intel's Nehalem in some benchmarks," said Nathan Brookwood, principal of market watcher Insight64. Other specs include scalability up to 32 sockets, 256KB L2 cache per core, 32MB of on chip eDRAM shared L3 cache, dual DDR3 memory controllers, 100GB/s memory bandwidth per chip, and 360GB/s SMP bandwidth per chip.
People keep forgetting: there is a reason why you don't see PowerPC on the desktop anymore; there is a reason why it is isolated to the Server and game console market, and there is a reason why Apple abandoned the PowerPC architecture that they helped develop.
PowerPC is far more comparable to the "Itanic" than the x86. Sure, it offers quite a bit of raw throughput, but only provides so much flexibility in terms of what can be done with that throughput. This is somewhat due to the fact that it is a RISC based architecture. Sure, you could argue that the x86 now has risc-like bits in it, but fundamentally x86 is not risc.

iPhone Apps Can't Be Used for Business

Shame on you if you purchased one of the 78 business apps from the iTunes store with the intent on using it for your...business? As quirky as that sounds, it's the exact stance Apple is taking.
This isn't a new policy on Apple's part, but it's garnering attention now after a Swedish customer named Martin posted his customer support exchange on his blog. Upon requesting an apps invoice that breaks down VAT (Value Added Tax) charges, a Tier 1 support representative informed Martin that he was simply out of luck.
"The iTunes Store sells only to customers as end-users for personal, noncommercial use in ther respective countries of residence. The amount you see on your receipt is a total (including tax) with this purpose in mind," the support rep wrote in an email to Martin.
The unnamed rep went on to explain that any attempts to claim purchases for tax reasons would be in violation of the terms of sale, which is true. But when Martin pointed out that "Swidish law requires you to specify sales tax, REGARDLESS of if you sell to a business or a private person," the rep made a pitch to Martin to leave iTunes Feedback to enact change with Apple's policy.

Nokia Confirms Claims 12 Hour Battery Life

Rumored no more, Nokia today finally confirmed plans to release a netbook, or a mini-laptop if you'd prefer to call it that. As for Nokia, it's calling the portable PC the Nokia Booklet 3G.
The Booklet 3G weighs less than 3 pounds (1.25kg) and measures just over 2cm. It boasts a 10-inch glass HD ready display, an Intel Atom processor, built-in A-GPS (works with Ovi Maps), WiFi, an HDMI port, and an SD card reader. But the biggest spec might be the claimed 12 hour battery.
"Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design, and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling," Nokia wrote in a press release. "In doing so, we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful, and more personal."
Nokia said it will unveil other details, including detailed specifications, availability, and price at Nokia World on September 2, 2009. Ever since Asus introduced the first Eee PCs in 2007, netbooks have become a mainstay of the mobile market and currently, Intel’s Atom is a driving force of virtually the entire industry. However, this is mostly due to there being little to no competition in this area.

Nokia will enter Netbook market?

According to the Economic Times, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told reporters at a press event Wednesday in India, that "the PC and the mobile will continue to come closer and merge." He said Nokia sees a lot of opportunity in this convergence and he added that the company is "looking at the Netbook market to see what kind of opportunity is there."
It shouldn't come as a big surprise that Nokia might push further into the computing space. The company has been marketing its new smartphone, the N97, as a "mobile computer." And the company has also been selling its mobile Internet devices, or N-series Tablets.
These devices, which are geared toward early adopters and gadget lovers, typically start at around $300 to $400. They don't incorporate a traditional cell phone, but they come with a full QWERTY keypad and access to the Internet via Wi-Fi or through a Bluetooth-connected phone.
Netbooks appeal to a wider audience than mobile Internet devices, which could help Nokia diversify its business. Netbooks, which once were seen as "companion devices" for accessing cloud-based services like Gmail or social-networking sites like Facebook, are now being used as full-blown computers.
Their low cost (around $299) has driven big sales of these devices. About 16 million Netbooks were sold in North America in 2008. And because these devices often use Windows XP, a familiar operating system, most PC users already feel comfortable using them.

Lenovo Offers Low-Functioning Batteries replace

If you’ve got a Lenovo laptop with a battery that’s providing sub-par performance, you just might be eligible for a free replacement.
The batteries in question don’t present any fire or safety hazard, so there’s no reason to worry about your health – the folks at Lenovo are simply looking to make nice. “Irreparable damage” and “battery cannot be charged” error messages from the Power Manager or Message Center are the main indicators that you have a bad battery.
If you’re not sure, but you have a ThinkPad R60, R61, T60 or T61 with battery FRU part numbers 42T4546, 42T4566 or 92P1141, and/or a model X60 or X61, with battery part numbers 42T4550, 42T4567, 42T4568, 92P1169, 92P1173, 93P5028 or 93P5030, it’s suggested that you should run the Battery Diagnostic Tool (available here), to find out if you need to swap it out.
Lenovo’s IdeaPad S12 is the soul of a netbook trapped in the anatomy of a notebook. It has now become clear that Lenovo plans to release three variants of this 12-inch netbook, which it had announced as the world’s first Ion-based netbook last month – the Ion-based SKU will be available later in the summer. Lenovo has begun accepting pre-orders for a Nano-based variant of this netbook. Of course, an Atom-powered SKU is also available.

Samsung Aims for New SSD Ads

Samsung has faced a lot of adversity when it comes to getting their fancy new SSDs to consumers. While they’re responsible for producing nearly half of the NAND flash in SSDs sold, they can’t seem to sell their own boxes.
That’s why they’re aiming their sights on the gamer crowd. According to Jim Elliott, Vice President of Memory Marketing for Samsung, “In addition to processing power, advanced graphic cards and high-resolution monitors, gamers want a fast storage drive for reduced loading times and faster game performance. Our 256GB SSD provides much better overall performance than conventional HDDs, as well as longer battery life for the notebook gamer. Clearly, all PC gamers will benefit from the blistering speeds and dazzling photorealism enabled by the Samsung 256GB SSD.”
Sure, the SSDs do cost a pretty penny, but if there’s any crowd that will pay a premium for the latest piece of hardware that will give them a competitive edge, it’s gamers. No official word yet as to when we can expect the adverts.
Anyway, it's a great idea to market these towards gamers. People will spend $400 on a graphics card setup to make their game just a tiny bit shinier and prettier than a $100 card. So I would say that spending an extra $120 to get a SSD to wipe out load times and get programs launched instantly in Windows will look like a good investment.

Acer Reduces 14- and 15-inch Notebooks

The global economic downturn hasn’t been nice to anyone, tech sector included. According to a recent report Acer has reduced their 14 and 15-inch ultra-thin notebook orders due to low market demand.
Wistron, an OEM that often makes large orders for the two notebook models, is now only producing 200,000 units per month, down from the projected 600,000 units. It’s expected that the drop in production will hurt Wistron’s notebook shipments in August. It also noted that the sky is blue.
Acer, always looking to turn their laptop line into a laptop army, recently added the Aspire AS7735Z and the Aspire AS5536 (pictured) to their arsenal.
The AS7735Z will come with a 17.3-inch display, and feature Nvidia’s PowerSave functionality (allowing users to get prolonged battery life by activating variable graphic settings). Under the hood it’ll come with an Intel T4200 processor, a 250GB HDD, and an 8X DVD-super multi double-layer drive (sounds like a Japanese game show!).
The AS5536 will come with an Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor, 4GB of RAM, a 250GB HDD and a 15.6-inch screen. This machine is being marketed as a “mobile multimedia powerhouse,” and is reported to feature a Dolby Home Theater surround sound system, two built-in stereo speakers, an Acer Tuba CineBass booster and 5.1-channel audio output.

Toshiba Gets Official for Blu-Ray Format

After strongly backing HD-DVD during the format wars of yesteryear, Toshiba has announced that they plan on releasing a Blu-ray player, and have applied to join the Blu-ray Disc Association.
“In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA,” stated an official press release. “Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course.”
So, as you can gather, there’s no word yet on any pricing or availability, but they’ll surely keep the world posted. If you have any question, you can also leave your comment here.

Apple breaks silenc

In an extremely rare move, an Apple executive has publicly commented on the App Store approval process as it relates to a controversial dictionary application.
Apple's Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and last seen playing the role of Steve Jobs at Apple events this year, e-mailed John Gruber of Daring Fireball to comment on the approval process of Ninjawords, a dictionary application that was initially rejected from the App Store because it supplied the definition of several dirty words. Schiller blamed the snafu on poor timing, saying that Apple never directly censored the application but felt it deserved a 17+ rating, which wasn't formally available as an option until parental controls were released along with the iPhone 3.0 software in June.
The developer of Ninjawords isn't exactly mollified by Apple's reasoning. "Apple may slap a 17+ rating on our app and wash their hands, saying 'you're not required to censor your app', but at the same time, they're putting a great deal of pressure on us to do so. Who wants to be the only illicit dictionary on the App Store?" said Phil Crosby of Matchstick, which created the application. Crosby and Gruber noted that several other dictionaries in the App Store contain language that some may find objectionable yet are not required to carry the equivalent of an R movie rating.
But while the debate over Ninjawords will rage on, what's perhaps most significant is that Apple has directly commented on its decision-making process regarding the approval or rejection of a specific iPhone application. As far as I can tell, Apple has never done this in the year-plus history of the App Store, with the notable exception of Baby Shaker. But even then, Apple didn't explain the reasoning behind its decision to approve an application it eventually called "deeply offensive."
Perhaps now that the FCC is taking a closer look at the Google Voice debacle, Apple will now start to finally give developers and iPhone users some specific input on the criteria it uses to approve or deny iPhone applications. To this point, the process has been a black box, frustrating developers time and time again.

Multiple Wireless Devices on One USB Transceiver

You can never have enough USB ports, but when it comes to wireless devices, wouldn't it be groovy if they all ran off of a single USB dongle? We certainly think so, and so does Logitech, who today announced the release of its Unifying Receiver.
Logitech's Unifying Receiver lets multiple wireless gadgets communicate with the host PC through a single USB dongle, and to kick off the proprietary technology, Logitech announced four compatible products. These include the Wireless Keyboard K350, Wireless Keyboard K340, Marathon Mouse M705, and Wireless Mouse M505.
As is the case with other Logitech wireless products, the new devices each use 2.4GHz wireless connectivity, but they no longer each need their own dongle. The Unifying Receiver further saves space by only protruding 8mm.
Up to six compatible devices can be connected at the same time, with each subsequent peripheral needing to be configured using Logitech's Unifying software. All devices connect securely using 128-bit AES encryption, and they work with Windows 7, Logitech says.
A lot of companies BUNDLE the keyboard and mouse together to connect through one dongle. This tech allows the user to PICK a keyboard and a mouse and connect through one dongle. this way people can have the keyboard AND mouse they want. Some bundles have a really nice keyboard...but a crappy mouse..or vise-versa.

Will Asus Cancel the World First USB 3.0 Motherboard

USB 2.0 rated at 480Mbit/s sounded great when it was released back in April 2000, but more than 9 years later its becoming pretty easy to saturate with our never-ending collection of high speed external drives. USB 3.0 clocks in at a much more respectable 4.8 Gbit/s, but those patiently awaiting hardware will have to cool their heels just a bit longer.
According to the Inquirer, Asus is cancelling what would have been the world’s first USB 3.0 motherboard the P6X58. The company hasn’t given any specific comment on it’s reason for the cancellation, but I would surmise it has something to do with the fact that you still can’t find any devices to pair up with it yet.
Speculation aside, I’m sure Asus still has USB 3.0 on it’s roadmap, but we still have no idea when the first motherboards / devices will hit the market. Want to learn more about the new standard? Make sure to take a look at our comprehensive guide to all things USB 3.0.
Perhaps the mobo wasn't stable with in on. ASUS has jumped the gun and messed it up before. Remember the a7v333? Not many do, because some of em were recalled and later they revisted the mobo to the a7v333x.
That was the first to have the usb 2.0 on it and it was a lemon of a mobo. It was possibly worst that i have had the experience of dealing with. Good luck finding the non-x version in ASUS documentation... They dropped it like a hot potatoe and tried to pretend it never happened. Mind you, it was the year of the leaky capacitors back maybe 5-6 years ago.
It wouldn't suprise me in the least if they haven't found a chip that could deal with the USB 3.0 and integrate it all in a stable way yet but this time erred on the side of caution instead of dumping it out and risking a black mark on their brand again, when there's no competition to worry about.
